Michael H. Bertino, M.D.

A native Texan, Dr. Bertino is one of the founding members of the group. He graduated from Southern Methodist University and the Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He was one of the first graduates of the Otolaryngology residency program in San Antonio and began practice with Dr. Sonny Marlowe in 1974. Dr. Bertino is Board Certified in Otolaryngology. Dr. Bertino has served as President of the Bexar County Medical Society and has been active in residency training as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Bertino sees patients at our Northwest and Downtown offices. He sees adults and children for general ENT issues.

G. Paul Laursen, M.D., D.D.S., F.A.C.S.

A native of Oklahoma, Dr. Laursen graduated from Cameron College in Lawton Oklahoma and earned his degree in dentistry at the University of Tennessee Dental School. He then attended and graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. Dr. Laursen received his Otolaryngology residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and joined the practice in 1981. He is Board Certified in Otolaryngology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. Dr. Laursen is a Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Laursen sees patients at our Northeast and Southeast offices. Harry Schilling, M.D., F.A.C.S.

A native Texan, Dr. Schilling graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and Southwestern Medical School. He received his residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and is Board Certified in Otolaryngology. Dr. Schilling is a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. After residency, he joined the practice in 1985. Dr. Schilling is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Stephen J. Talley, M.D., F.A.C.S.

A native Texan, Dr. Talley graduated from Texas Tech University and Baylor College of Medicine with high academic honors. He received his residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and is Board Certified in Otolaryngology. Dr. Talley is a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. Upon completion of his residency training, Dr. Talley joined the practice in 1987. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Talley sees patients at our Northeast and North Central locations. Gilbert M. Ruiz, R.P.H., M.D., F.A.C.S.

A native of San Antonio, Dr. Ruiz graduated from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy and the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He received his residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and is Board Certified in Otolaryngology. Dr. Ruiz is a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. Upon completion of his residency training, he began a private solo practice. He then joined the group in 1993. Dr. Ruiz is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology and Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He has been active as Clinical Faculty in the Christus Santa Rosa Family Practice Residency Program. Dr. Ruiz has served as President of the Mexican American Physicians Association. He is also Board Certified in Sleep Medicine. Dr. Ruiz is fluent in Spanish and sees patients at our Northwest and Downtown locations. He sees patients for evaluation and diagnosis of sleep disorders as well as adults and children for general ENT issues.

Robert P. Spears, M.D., F.A.C.S.

A native of Louisiana, Dr. Spears graduated from Louisiana State University and is a magna cum laude graduate of Louisiana State University Health Science Center at Shreveport. Dr. Spears received his Otolaryngology residency training at the Medical College of Georgia and is Board Certified. Upon completion of residency, he joined the practice in 1995. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. Dr. Spears is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Patrick N. Brown, M.D.

A native Texan, Dr. Brown graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He received his residency training in Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and is Board Certified. Upon completion of residency, Dr. Brown joined the practice in 1996. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and has served as Clinical Faculty for the Christus Santa Rosa Family Residency. Dr. Brown is also Board Certified in Sleep Medicine. He is fluent in Spanish. Dr. Brown sees patients at our Northwest and Southeast locations. He sees patients for evaluation and diagnosis of sleep disorders as well as adults and children for general ENT issues. He also has a special interest in endocrine surgery.

Devang P. Desai, M.D., F.A.C.S.

A native of Chicago, Dr. Desai graduated from Northwestern University near Chicago and the University of Illinois Chicago Medical School with honors. He received his residency training in Otolaryngology at the University of Illinois Medical Center and is Board Certified. Dr. Desai received further training at the Eye and Ear Infirmary in Chicago with special focus in pediatric otolaryngology at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Desai joined the Head and Neck Surgical Associates in Wichita Falls and then moved to the Ear, Nose & Throat Clinics of San Antonio in 2000. Dr. Desai is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is fluent in Spanish and sees patients in our Northeast, Downtown and North Central locations. Dr. Desai sees adults and children for general ENT issues.

Daniel J. Fleming, M.D.

A native of Michigan, Dr. Fleming is a summa cum laude graduate of Albion College and the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. After serving as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force, he received his residency training in Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and is Board Certified. Upon completion of his residency training, Dr. Fleming joined the practice in 2002. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and has served as Clinical Faculty in the Christus Santa Rosa Family Practice Residency Program. Richard K. Newman, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Head & Neck Surgical Oncologist

A native of San Antonio, Dr. Newman is a graduate of Texas A & M University and the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He received his residency training at Wilford Hall US Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio and is Board Certified. In addition, Dr. Newman received fellowship training in head and neck cancer at the prestigious M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston Texas. Dr. Newman practice with Affiliated Head & Neck Surgeons of San Antonio until 2006, when he joined the practice in 2006. Dr. Newman is active in resident training and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Newman is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also received a special appointment by Governor Rick Perry to serve in the Peer Review Process for the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Newman is active in the Methodist Physician Outreach and has worked on numerous medical missions to Honduras. Dr. Newman sees patients for the diagnosis and management of head and neck cancer at our Northwest and Downtown locations.

Nathan W. Hales, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Head & Neck Surgical Oncologist

Born in Utah and raised in Texas, Dr. Hales did his undergraduate studies at Texas A & M University (and remains a very enthusiastic Aggie!). He subsequently completed medical school at The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston where he graduated with honors. He received his residency training in Otolaryngology and subsequent fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He is Board Certified in Otolaryngology and a fellow of The American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hales is active in residency training and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio as well as the Combined Armed Forces Otolaryngology program here in San Antonio. He serves on the task force for the American Board of Otolaryngology. Dr. Hales also directs the community Head & Neck Tumor Board to promote superior, coordinated and compassionate care for patients with cancer of the head and neck. He is fluent in Spanish and enjoys participating in service missions to areas such as Bolivia and Nicaragua. Dr. Hales sees patients for the diagnosis and management of head and neck cancer and has a special interest in endocrine (thyroid and parathyroid) surgery. He directs the Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) Program and was the first in San Antonio to offer these procedures. He also sees adults and children for general ear, nose, and throat issues. David Gleinser, M.D.

A native of San Antonio, Dr. Gleinser is a graduate of St. Mary’s University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. He received his residency training at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and is undergoing Board Certification in Otolaryngology. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Gleinser joined the practice. He sees adults and children for general ENT issues at our Northeast, North Central and Westover Hills locations.

Viet Pham, M.D.

Dr. Pham hails from Fort Worth, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He then received his medical doctorate at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, has been the recipient of the Gold-Headed Cane Award upon graduation. Dr. Pham remained in Galveston for his residency training, where he also undertook a number of medical mission trips to Vietnam, received the Residency Research Award, and was inducted into the Byron Bailey Surgical Society upon completion of his training. He sees adults and children for all ear, nose, and throat issues at the Downtown, Stone Oak, Southeast, and Westover Hills locations.

Christopher York, M.D.

Raised on a farm in North Texas, Dr. York graduated Summa Cum Laude from Texas A&M University with degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Spanish. While at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Dr. York earned the Osler Student Scholar Award in recognition of his commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care. After graduating first in his medical school class, he completed his residency training in Otolaryngology at UT Southwestern in Dallas. Dr. York is fluent in Spanish. He sees adults and pediatrics for general ENT issues.

Eugene Son, M.D.

Dr. Son was raised in Houston, Texas. He attended Emory University in Atlanta, GA where he graduated with a degree in Biology. He then received his M.D. here at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He performed his residency training in Otolaryngology at The University of Texas Medical Branch. He subsequently completed his fellowship training in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE. Dr. Son is Board Certified in Otolaryngology. He sees patients for the diagnosis and management of both malignant and benign head and neck tumors and thyroid disease. He performs Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS). His other interests include the treatment of skin cancer, facial reconstruction, and facial reanimation. Dr. Son also sees adults and children of all ages for general ear, nose, and throat issues.
